Trogir Waterfront

Best Things to Do in Trogir Croatia

I recently spent an entire month in Croatia and chose Trogir to be my home base. For an entire month, I lived on the outskirts of this beautiful town while taking day trips to popular sights all over the country. If I know one town in Croatia very well, it is Trogir. The town of Trogir actually makes for a great home base for exploring the rest of the country. It is centrally located and about equal distance from Dubrovnik in the south and Plitvice Lakes in the north. It’s only about 25 minutes from Split and only about 5 minutes from Split Airport. It’s a pretty great little town. Over my month stay, I got to know Trogir Croatia pretty well. So, here are my picks for the best things to do in Trogir Croatia!

1. St. Lawrence Cathedral

A visit to the St. Lawrence Cathedral is one of the most popular things to do in Trogir, Croatia. It is located in the heart of the Old Town, and its Romanesque and Gothic architecture is a sight to behold. The St. Lawrence Cathedral was built in the 13th century, and it has been a place of worship for centuries. The St. Lawrence Cathedral is an important part of Trogir’s heritage, and it is definitely worth a visit when you are in town.

Today, it is also a popular tourist destination, and visitors can explore the cathedral’s beautiful interior and learn about its rich history. You can even climb to the top of the tower for beautiful views of the surrounding area. Compared to similar cathedrals in Split, the St. Lawrence Cathedral sees much smaller crowds so you don’t feel as rushed. The square outside of the cathedral feels very intimate with lots of old world charm.

2. Kamerlengo Castle

Along with the Cathedral, Kamerlengo Castle is one of the most popular attractions in Trogir, Croatia. The castle was built in the 15th century and served as a fortress and a prison. Today, it is a popular tourist destination with an understated appeal. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, which include a small museum, an amphitheater, and a lookout tower. The Kamerlengo Castle is also the site of the many festivals, including music and food festivals. These festivals feature classical music concerts, opera performances, and other cultural events. I was lucky enough to be visiting during of these festivals and it is amazing. The castle gets covered in lights with vendors just behind it. For some of the best views of Trogir town, climb to the top of the lookout tower. This is definitely one of the best things to do in Trogir Croatia.

3. Stroll the Promenade

Trogir’s waterfront promenade is a lovely place to stroll, especially in the evening when the restaurants and cafes are open and the yachts are lit up. There are plenty of places to stop for a drink or a bite to eat, and the atmosphere is always pleasant. The promenade is also a great place to people watch, as there is always a steady stream of locals and tourists passing by. And if you’re looking for a more upscale experience, there are also some beautiful yachts moored along the promenade. Whether you’re looking to relax or people-watch, Trogir’s promenade is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. The waterfront promenade in Trogir may be one of my favorite I’ve ever seen. It is very large with beautiful trees and churches lining the promenade. Don’t miss out on one of the best things to do in Trogir Croatia!

4. Wander the Narrow Streets

One of the best things to do in Trogir Croatia is to simply wander the narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. The town is not very large, but it is full of winding alleyways and medieval history. Each corner you turn down is beautiful. Trogir was founded by the Greeks in the third century BC, and it later became a Roman colony. The town’s medieval architecture is some of the best preserved in Croatia, and the streets are lined with Venetian-style buildings. Visitors to Trogir can explore the town’s many churches and attractions, or simply enjoy strolling through the narrow streets and soaking up the atmosphere. There are also plenty of cafes and souvenir shops within the city walls. Be sure to take your time walking through this adorable town.

5. Take an Island Tour by Boat Excursion

things to do in trogir croatia

One of the most popular things to do in all of Croatia is visiting the many islands. There are over 1,000 islands in Croatia, some large and some small. Actually, Trogir itself is an island. From Trogir, you can book boat excursions of all kinds to take you to the neighboring islands. You can find excursion rates anywhere from luxury private to budget options. If you are coming during the summer months, be prepared to book in advance and pay a premium. If you come during shoulder season, you may be able to negotiate a better price since there is less demand. Either way, you won’t want to miss out on one of the best things to do in Trogir Croatia, taking a boat trip. You can book your own island tour excursions through the link below!

6. Visit Nearby Split by Ferry

things to do in trogir croatia

One of the best things to do in Trogir isn’t even in Trogir. The nearby city of Split is the second largest city in Croatia, and an extremely popular tourist destination. There is so much to see and do in Split, although it can be a bit more expensive than Trogir. I have written an entire blog post all about Split which you can find here for more information.

Thankfully, there is a ferry that goes from Trogir to Split and back. Trogir is only a 30-minute drive from Split, making it the perfect day trip or overnight excursion. The best way to get to Split from Trogir is by ferry, and the view from the boat is simply stunning. On one side, you have the towering cliffs of Split’s coast; on the other, the lush green islands dotting the Adriatic Sea. 7. Visit Krka National Park

things to do in trogir croatia

Krka National Park is one of Croatia’s most popular tourist destinations, and it’s easy to see why. The park is home to a spectacular series of waterfalls, as well as a number of beautiful hiking trails. Best of all, Krka is just a short drive from the city of Trogir. The journey takes around 45 minutes by car, or an hour by bus. You can either book a rental car or take a day trip from downtown Trogir. If you are looking for the easiest option, I suggest booking a tour. You can usually find a decently priced tour and they take care of everything. A car gives you more flexibility though it is more expensive. So if you’re looking for a breathtaking natural setting that’s close Trogir, Krka National Park is the perfect destination.

8. Have A Drink on the Waterfront Promenade

Having drinks at my favorite happy hour spot, the Hotel Concordia.

The waterfront promenade is one of the best parts of Trogir so be sure to take a minute to relax with a cocktail or coffee. There are lots of great places to get drinks along the promenade, my favorite being at the Hotel Concordia. They have great prices especially for happy hour and a nice view of the promenade. The closer you get to the main entrance into the walled town, the more expensive the drinks get. This cute place is located at the very end, but still has the same great view for half the cost! Although prices along the promenade are the most expensive in town, it is certainly worth the cost to relax in such beautiful ambience. This is one of my personal best things to do in Trogir Croatia!

9. Visit Ciovo Island

things to do in trogir croatia

Ciovo Island is a beautiful Croatian island situated in the Adriatic Sea. The island is located near the city of Trogir and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Ciovo Island is a popular tourist destination for summer and offers many activities for visitors to enjoy. There are numerous beaches on the island, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. There are also many hiking trails, providing stunning views of the island’s coastline. In addition, Ciovo Island is home to several restaurants and cafes, offering a taste of traditional Croatian cuisine. If you want to see what a more local Croatian town looks like, take a stroll around Ciovo Island.

10. Hangout in the Main Town Square

things to do in trogir croatia

Last but not least, be sure to hangout in the main square. The town square on Trogir is very small compared to others in Croatia but it feels very intimate. The main square is where St. Lawerence Cathedral is with a beautiful clock tower and other historic buildings surrounding it. There are lots of places to eat, get a drink, have some gelato, or simply sit and people watch. It is a beautiful little town square, and I highly recommend spending at least half an hour just hanging out here. While not the most exciting, this is still one of my favorite things to do in Trogir Croatia!

Getting from Split to Trogir by Ferry

Getting from Split to Trogir by ferry is very simple and supposed to be a fun way of traveling. It is a car ferry that operates between Split and the town of Trogir, Croatia. The ferry departs Split several times per day and the journey takes about an hour. Getting from Split to Trogir by Ferry is a popular way to travel between these two destinations as it is more affordable and more enjoyable than sitting in traffic. Keep in mind that the ferry only runs certain times of the year. If you come in winter, the ferry will not be running. Driving into Split is not very enjoyable, so I would avoid it if possible. In addition, the ferry offers stunning views of the Dalmatian Coastline. Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the ferry terminal on the day of travel.

Where to Stay in Trogir

View of Trogir from my Airbnb

There are some pretty good accommodation options in and around Trogir. Like I’ve said, most people only come to Trogir for a day trip or maybe one night. Depending how long you are planning to visit, you may want a hotel or an Airbnb. While I enjoyed my Airbnb for my stay, I wouldn’t recommend it to fellow travelers only because it is a little far away from the main town. But, there are lots of good hotel options in Trogir town. One of the positives of staying in Trogir is that it is more affordable than other big cities like Split and Dubrovnik. Follow the link below to find the best hotel for your stay in Trogir, Croatia!

Quick Tips for Trogir Croatia

things to do in trogir croatia

Since I have spent so much time in Trogir Croatia, I figured I might as well give some of my personal tips on enjoying it better. Keep in mind these are just my personal tips and thoughts.

  1. Sightsee Early– If you have the option, come explore Trogir early in the morning. Since the town is very small, when large crowds show up it gets very crammed quickly. You can beat the crowds by coming before noon.
  2. Do Your Research on Restaurants– If you are planning to eat at a restaurant when you are visiting Trogir, do your research beforehand. I have had some really bad dining experiences here. I won’t mention specifics, but just be sure to do your research. I would avoid eating along the promenade, as those are more touristy restaurants with not great quality food.
  3. Careful When It Rains– If during your visit it is raining, be very careful walking around town. As beautiful as they are, the cobblestone streets turn to ice with the slightest bit of moisture. Even with good shoes on, I have fallen several times walking around when it is raining. Be careful.
  4. Go With The Flow– Trogir is a very slow paced town, so don’t expect things to be quick. The service usually takes forever and so does the food, but that’s just part of the fun. Make sure to account for plenty of time. Things don’t always go to plan so just remember to be flexible.
  5. Stay Connected- Use Airalo e-SIMS for affordable and reliable phone service while traveling through Croatia!

Conclusion

As you can see, there are some pretty great things to do in Trogir Croatia. Even if you are just coming for a quick day trip, Trogir is sure to impress. You can honestly see everything on this list in one day, maybe even half a day if you are quick. This makes it a great place to visit as a side trip from Split. Another great option is to stay in Trogir for one or two nights before flying out of Split airport. The airport is only a 10 minute drive from the town and much easier to get to than from Split city. So, this makes Trogir a great place to end your trip on with close proximity to leaving. No matter what you decide, I hope that you have a great time and get to do all of these amazing things to do in Trogir Croatia!
