Best City of Portugal: Lisbon vs. Porto

Portugal is a country with a rich history and culture, and it is no surprise that its two largest cities, Lisbon and Porto, are both popular tourist destinations. But which is the best city of Portugal? That is a question that can be difficult to answer. Both Lisbon and Porto have their own unique charms. Lisbon is the capital city and has a more cosmopolitan feel, while Porto is smaller and more traditionally Portuguese. In the end, it really depends on what you are looking for in a city. After spending an entire month in both Lisbon and Porto, I definitely have my reasons for my favorite. In this guide, we’ll be answering the age old question of: Lisbon vs. Porto for the best city of Portugal. We’ll also go over how to travel between them either by way of the Lisbon to Porto train, by car and more. So if you are choosing between Porto from Lisbon, this is your guide. Let’s get into it!

Lisbon vs. Porto-Which is the Best City of Portugal?

The best city of Portugal is a highly contested title. Some say Lisbon, with its beautiful architecture and Mediterranean atmosphere. Others contend that Porto is the best city to visit in Portugal, with its cobbled streets and bridges spanning the Rio Douro. So, which city is the best? It depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for stunning architecture and a vibrant nightlife, then Lisbon is the best city for you. If you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe and some amazing views, then Porto is the best city of Portugal.

From my personal experience, Porto is the best city of Portugal. And there are many reasons for this. Lisbon was still amazing in its own right, but I felt that Porto was more or less what I picture when I think of a waterfront European city. If you have time to visit both cities, I highly recommend doing so. They are both fantastic European cities with a lot to offer. But if you only have time to visit one, I would suggest Porto and here’s why.

1. Porto

best city of portugal lisbon vs. porto

Porto is the best city of Portugal for its rich culture, beautiful scenery, and friendly people. Situated on the Douro River, Porto is known for its stunning bridges and buildings. The best way to experience the city is by taking a stroll along the river, which is the heart of the tourist area. Porto is also home to a number of museums and galleries, which are great for learning about the city’s history and culture. And if you’re looking for a place to relax, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal or a drink while watching the world go by. Porto has all the old world charm you could ever want, with beautiful old buildings down narrow alley-ways.

Compared to Lisbon, Porto is much less touristy. That’s not to say that Porto doesn’t have its fair share of over-tourism and everything that comes with it. But compared to Lisbon, the crowds in Porto are much smaller and more manageable. My biggest complaint about Lisbon is that there is ALWAYS somebody trying to sell you something. It gets very annoying after a while. I never experienced that once in my entire time in Porto. This is the main reason why I think Porto is the best city of Portugal. So why not come and see for yourself why Porto is the best city of Portugal?

2. Lisbon

While my pick for the best city of Portugal is definitely Porto, Lisbon is also worth a visit if you have the time. Many people may be shocked to see that I chose Porto as the best city of Portugal since Lisbon is a much more popular destination. My issue with Lisbon is that it was overly touristy in many areas that you can’t even enjoy it. You are constantly being sold things and it takes away from the experience a little bit.

Now don’t get me wrong, Lisbon is an absolutely beautiful city with so much to offer visitors. The city has a very rich history with many popular sights and attractions. If you have time to visit both of these amazing places, you should definitely do so. Lisbon is quickly becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Europe, and for good reason. With many fine dining restaurants, boutique shops, and quaint alleyways, Lisbon has a lot to offer travelers of all backgrounds.
