Grindellodge Review: Is This Boutique Hotel in Grindelwald Worth It?

Grindellodge Hotel Grindelwald

Grindelwald is one of the most beautiful mountain destinations in Switzerland, but finding the right hotel can make a huge difference to your experience. With so many accommodations offering the famous Eiger views, I was looking for somewhere that offered more than just a convenient place to sleep. During my October trip, I spent two nights at Grindellodge, a beautiful Japanese-inspired boutique hotel just outside the busy center of Grindelwald, and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the entire visit.

I stayed in the Yama Suite from October 20–22, 2026, and between the two private balconies overlooking the mountains, the beautiful interior design, excellent dining, and relaxing private spa, I genuinely loved my time here. Even though the weather didn’t cooperate for much of my trip, having such a comfortable hotel to come back to made a big difference.

In this Grindellodge review, I’ll share my full experience, including what I loved, what could have been better, and whether I think this boutique hotel in Grindelwald is worth the money.

What Is Grindellodge?

Grindellodge view of outside

Grindellodge is a boutique hotel in Grindelwald that combines traditional Swiss Alpine charm with Japanese-inspired design. The property was renovated in 2025, and its concept showcases the connection between Grindelwald and Japan, particularly the history of Japanese mountaineers exploring the surrounding Swiss Alps. It’s an interesting concept for a hotel in the middle of Switzerland, but what impressed me most was how naturally the two styles worked together.

My first impression was that the property looked exceptionally clean, attractive, and high-end. Most traditional Swiss chalets in the area have dark wooden exteriors, but Grindellodge uses a much lighter wood that gives the building a softer, more contemporary appearance. It still looks right at home in the mountains, but there’s something noticeably different about it compared to many of the surrounding hotels.

The Japanese influence becomes much more apparent once you step inside. The lobby is absolutely beautiful, with soft pink tones, cherry blossom details, and elegant furnishings that create a welcoming atmosphere. That same aesthetic carries through the rest of the hotel, giving it a very distinct personality without feeling overly themed.

I sometimes find that hotels with a strong design concept can feel a little forced, but that wasn’t the case here. Everything felt tastefully done, from the colors and furniture to the lighting and smaller decorative details. It has a high-end feel without being stuffy or overly formal, which is exactly the kind of accommodation I tend to enjoy.

My Experience Staying in the Yama Suite at Grindellodge

Bedroom in Yama Suite at Grindellodge with Eiger Views

During my two-night stay, I was in the Yama Suite, one of Grindellodge’s larger accommodation options. It was a fantastic space and felt much more like a small apartment than a conventional hotel room, which I really appreciated given that I ended up spending quite a bit of time inside because of the weather.

When you first enter the suite, there’s a small dining area with a table and seating for two, along with an espresso machine, mini fridge, and sink. Having a dedicated area to make coffee was a surprisingly nice feature, especially because I love starting my mornings slowly with a coffee and a mountain view. Being able to make one without leaving the room and take it straight outside onto the balcony was one of those simple little things that made the stay even better.

Yama Suite Living Room at Grindellodge

From there, the suite opens into a comfortable living room with a couch, television, and coffee table. The bedroom is in a separate room with its own door, which is a great feature if you’re traveling as a couple and one person tends to wake up earlier than the other. I could spend time in the living room or head out onto the balcony without disturbing my partner.

The interior design of the suite was particularly impressive. The Japanese-inspired aesthetic continues throughout, with soft colors, beautiful finishes, and lighting that I especially loved. Everything felt thoughtfully designed and high quality, while still being comfortable enough to relax in for hours. The bathroom was also lovely, with modern finishes and a really excellent shower. It even had a Japanese bidet toilet, which was a great addition and something I haven’t experienced since I was in Japan.

My only minor complaint was that the mattress was quite firm for my personal preference. I generally prefer a softer bed, so it wasn’t quite as comfortable for me as I would have liked, although that’s obviously subjective and something other guests might actually appreciate. Other than that, I was genuinely impressed by the suite and would happily stay in it again.

The Incredible Eiger Views From the Yama Suite

Panorama Views of Eiger Mountains from Grindellodge Hotel Balcony

As beautiful as the room itself was, the real highlight of the Yama Suite was the view. The suite has two separate balconies, one accessible from the living room and another from the bedroom, and both have seating for two. They look out toward the incredible mountain scenery surrounding Grindelwald, including the famous Eiger, and I honestly think this is one of the best reasons to stay here.

I spent a huge amount of my time at Grindellodge sitting outside on the balcony. Even when the weather wasn’t particularly good, there was something incredibly relaxing about sitting there with a coffee, watching the clouds move around the mountains, and enjoying the scenery. It’s exactly the kind of experience I look for when choosing accommodation in the Alps, and having two balconies meant there was plenty of space to enjoy it.

Unfortunately, the weather during my October visit was far from ideal. We had intermittent conditions on the first day, followed by heavy rain for much of the second, and at times the mountains were almost completely hidden behind the clouds. But on the final morning, the weather finally cleared, and the views from Grindellodge were absolutely spectacular.

The sky was bright blue, the clouds had lifted, and the mountain peaks were covered in fresh snow from the previous day’s weather. It looked completely different from when we had arrived, with the autumn colors down in the valley contrasting beautifully against the newly snow-covered mountains. I spent as much time as possible enjoying the view before checking out, and it ended up being one of my favorite moments of the entire trip.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Grindelwald with impressive Eiger views, this is absolutely one I’d recommend considering. Of course, mountain visibility is never guaranteed, particularly during the autumn shoulder season, but when the weather cooperates, the views from the Yama Suite really are incredible.

The Private Spa at Grindellodge

Another highlight of my stay was the private spa experience. Grindellodge has a dedicated wellness space that you reserve in advance, rather than a typical hotel spa where guests come and go throughout the day. We booked a 90-minute session and had the entire wellness area to ourselves, which was something I’d never experienced before.

The spa includes a whirlpool, sauna, steam room, and relaxation area with a waterbed. It’s designed more as a private wellness circuit than a traditional treatment spa, so rather than coming here for massages or beauty treatments, you can simply move between the different facilities at your own pace. Robes and slippers were provided, and everything was beautifully presented.

The design was gorgeous, continuing the soft pink tones found throughout the hotel while incorporating beautiful stonework and a more peaceful, spa-like atmosphere. I really appreciated how private the whole experience felt. There was no waiting to use the sauna or whirlpool, no noise from other guests, and no need to rush from one facility to the next.

We spent the full 90 minutes relaxing and moving between the different areas, and by the end, we both felt incredibly refreshed. After spending so much time dealing with cold and rainy October weather, it was exactly the kind of experience I wanted. I can also imagine how nice this would be after a full day of hiking or skiing.

Is the Grindellodge Spa Worth Booking?

Absolutely. If you’re staying at Grindellodge and enjoy saunas, whirlpools, and wellness experiences, I’d highly recommend setting aside some time for the private spa. Having the entire space to yourself makes it feel more special than a typical shared hotel wellness area, and the 90-minute session was a really enjoyable part of our stay.

The private spa is an additional paid experience and should be reserved ahead of time, so I’d recommend checking the current price and availability directly with the hotel before arriving.

Breakfast at Grindellodge

Breakfast buffet at Grindellodge Hotel

I was also really impressed with the breakfast at Grindellodge, which was included during both mornings of my stay. Breakfast is served in the Japanese restaurant on the ground floor, and it’s a beautiful space to start the day, particularly when the clouds clear enough to reveal the surrounding mountains.

The breakfast is buffet-style, with a really good selection of hot and cold options. There were scrambled and hard-boiled eggs, sausages, hash browns, yogurt, fresh fruit, pastries, pancakes, cheeses, deli meats, and plenty of other choices. Everything I tried was delicious, and I appreciated having a good variety rather than the relatively limited continental breakfast you sometimes find at boutique hotels.

There was also a coffee machine and a selection of juices. The food was nicely presented, the dining area felt relaxed, and the overall experience was exactly what I wanted before heading out into the mountains.

One thing that made breakfast especially enjoyable was the view. Sitting there with a coffee and breakfast while looking out toward the mountains was such a lovely way to begin the morning, particularly on our final day when the weather had finally cleared.

Breakfast can sometimes feel like an afterthought at hotels, but that definitely wasn’t my impression here. I was genuinely pleased with the quality and variety, and it’s another reason I thought the overall Grindellodge experience was so good.

Dining at Grindellodge: Umami Japanese Restaurant

Ramen Dinner at Umami at Grindellodge hotel
Sushi Dinner at Umami Restaurant in Grindellodge Hotel

One of the things I really liked about Grindellodge was having a genuinely good restaurant within the hotel itself. Umami Japanese Restaurant is located on the ground floor, serving Japanese dishes including ramen, sushi, and other specialties, and we decided to have dinner here one evening during our stay.

I ordered tofu udon along with some sushi, and both were fantastic. The udon was delicious, and it was exactly the kind of comforting meal I wanted after spending the day in chilly October weather. The sushi was equally enjoyable, and I thought the food was a really nice complement to the Japanese-inspired atmosphere of the hotel.

I also loved that the restaurant fit naturally with Grindellodge’s overall concept. It didn’t feel like a random restaurant attached to a hotel, but rather an extension of the same thoughtful design and atmosphere I’d enjoyed throughout the property. It was relaxed, attractive, and a really pleasant place to spend the evening.

Given how expensive dining in Grindelwald can be, I also appreciated the convenience of having somewhere I genuinely wanted to eat without needing to head into the busy village center. Whether you’re staying at Grindellodge or simply looking for Japanese food in Grindelwald, Umami is a restaurant I’d recommend checking out.

Dinner at Glacier Restaurant in Grindelwald

Dinner at Glacier Restaurant in Grindelwald

During our stay, we also had the opportunity to enjoy dinner at Glacier Restaurant, located inside Boutique Hotel Glacier, another property belonging to the same hotel group as Grindellodge. This ended up being one of my favorite dining experiences from the trip and is something I’d highly recommend considering if you’re visiting Grindelwald for a special occasion.

One particularly nice convenience was the complimentary shuttle service we used between the two hotels. It was only around a five-minute drive, so we didn’t have to worry about driving ourselves or finding parking. This was especially appreciated since we were planning to enjoy some wine with dinner.

Boutique Hotel Glacier looked beautiful as well, and it’s somewhere I’d love to experience on a future visit. The restaurant itself was elegant, with a thoughtfully designed interior and incredible views toward the mountains. Despite being a more upscale dining experience, the atmosphere didn’t feel overly formal or pretentious, which I really appreciated.

Glacier restaurant focuses on creative, seasonal cuisine, using Swiss ingredients and modern cooking techniques. I’m not someone who regularly eats at fine-dining restaurants, so this was a real treat and something a little different from the meals I normally have while traveling.

We enjoyed a three-course dinner with some delicious wine. My meal started with braised celeriac, followed by Swiss salmon, and finished with an incredibly creative pear dessert. Everything was beautifully presented, and the flavors were genuinely impressive. The pear dessert in particular was one of the most unique desserts I’ve ever had, and I loved experiencing combinations of flavors and textures that I wouldn’t normally order.

What stood out just as much as the food was the service. The staff were absolutely fantastic, going above and beyond what I’m accustomed to experiencing in restaurants. The service felt attentive and polished without being uncomfortable or overly formal, which made the entire evening feel special while still being relaxed.

I really can’t say enough good things about the dinner. Between the beautiful setting, exceptional service, great wine, and delicious food, it was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. If you’re spending a few nights in Grindelwald and want to treat yourself to a memorable meal, Glacier Restaurant would be very high on my list.

Grindellodge Location: A Peaceful Stay Just Outside Central Grindelwald

Grindellodge hotel location in Grindelwald

The location of Grindellodge was another major highlight for me, and honestly, I think it’s one of the hotel’s biggest advantages.

Grindelwald is an incredibly beautiful destination, but it’s also a very popular tourist town, and the center can get quite busy. Personally, I don’t always enjoy staying right in the middle of the busiest part of a destination, particularly when I’m visiting somewhere for the mountains and scenery rather than the shops and crowds.

Grindellodge is situated a little outside the main village center, in a much quieter area that felt peaceful throughout our stay. It was such a nice contrast to the busy streets of central Grindelwald, and I loved being able to come back to somewhere that felt calm and relaxed at the end of the day.

Despite being away from the busiest streets, the hotel is still conveniently located. From my experience, it was approximately a 10-minute walk into the village, which made it easy to head into town whenever we wanted. I actually preferred walking, especially because the scenery around Grindelwald is so beautiful, but there’s also a bus stop directly outside the hotel for guests who would rather use public transportation.

Visitors with a valid Grindelwald Guest Card can use the local bus services free of charge, although it’s worth confirming the routes covered and any applicable conditions during your stay. I didn’t personally use the buses, but having that option is a nice convenience, especially for travelers without a car.

Parking at Grindellodge

We drove to Grindelwald from Jaun, and having parking available directly in front of Grindellodge made the arrival process very easy. Parking was complimentary during our stay, which I particularly appreciated in a destination where so many travel expenses can add up quickly.

We used Grindellodge as our base for exploring the region, including our hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and our final-day trip to Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, and Gimmelwald. Having a comfortable hotel in a quieter part of the village worked really well for the way we like to travel.

If you’re visiting Grindelwald by car, I think the location is especially appealing. And even if you’re arriving by train, the local bus connections make the hotel worth considering, although I would check the current route and schedule before booking.

What I Loved About Staying at Grindellodge

Travel With Hayden at Grindellodge Hotel

There was a lot I enjoyed about Grindellodge, but three things really made the experience stand out: the views, the design, and the overall atmosphere.

The views from the Yama Suite were easily my favorite part. I travel to places like Grindelwald because I love being surrounded by mountains, and there’s something pretty special about having scenery like that directly outside your room. Even though the weather wasn’t ideal for much of my visit, I still spent a huge amount of time on the balcony, and those incredible views on the final morning made the experience even more memorable.

I was also really impressed by the Japanese-inspired design. The soft pink tones, cherry blossom details, beautiful lighting, and lighter wooden finishes gave Grindellodge a completely different feel from the traditional Swiss chalets in the area. It’s unique without feeling gimmicky, and everything feels carefully considered.

Finally, I loved how comfortable and relaxing the entire experience was. The hotel was quiet, the suite was spacious, the private spa was fantastic, and both dining experiences were excellent. Even with the heavy rain that affected our trip, I never felt frustrated about having to spend more time at the hotel because it was such an enjoyable place to be.

Who Should Stay at Grindellodge?

Eiger Mountains Views in Grindelwald at Grindellodge Hotel

I think Grindellodge is particularly well suited to couples looking for a relaxing mountain getaway, especially if you enjoy boutique hotels with a distinct design style. The Yama Suite was fantastic for two people, with plenty of space to spread out, separate living and sleeping areas, and two balconies where you can sit together and enjoy the scenery.

It’s also an excellent option for travelers who want impressive mountain views without staying right in the busiest part of Grindelwald. I personally loved being able to walk into the village when I wanted to, then return to somewhere quiet and comfortable afterward.

If you’re visiting for hiking, skiing, or exploring the wider Jungfrau Region, the hotel works well as a base, especially for travelers who appreciate coming back to a beautiful room after a long day outside. The private spa adds another layer to the experience, and having good restaurants nearby makes evenings easy.

On the other hand, if you’re traveling on a strict budget and plan to spend almost every waking hour exploring, a simpler hotel might make more financial sense.

My Final Verdict of Grindellodge Review: Would I Stay Here Again?

Views of Eiger Noth Face from Balcony at Grindellodge in Grindelwald

Absolutely. Grindellodge was one of the highlights of my October trip to Grindelwald, and it’s a hotel I’d happily return to.

What made it stand out wasn’t just one particular feature, although the Eiger views from the Yama Suite were certainly incredible. It was the combination of beautiful Japanese-inspired design, a comfortable and spacious suite, a peaceful location, excellent dining, and a genuinely enjoyable private spa experience.

I also think my stay was a good reminder of how much the right accommodation can influence a trip. The weather in Grindelwald wasn’t particularly cooperative, and we ended up spending more time indoors than expected, but I honestly didn’t mind because Grindellodge was such a lovely place to relax.

While I came away from Grindelwald with slightly mixed feelings about the destination itself, I had no such reservations about the hotel. It’s exactly the kind of boutique accommodation I enjoy: beautiful, comfortable, thoughtfully designed, and surrounded by incredible scenery.

If you’re planning a trip to Grindelwald and want somewhere special to stay, particularly if you’re looking for a room with Eiger mountain views, I’d highly recommend checking out Grindellodge.

And if you can, book yourself some time in the private spa. It’s a wonderful addition to the experience.
