The Azores Hot Springs Guide

The Best Natural Hot Springs in the Azores

1. Parque Terra Nostra

Azores Hot Spring
Parque Terra Nostra Thermal Hot Spring

My favorite hot spring in the Azores is Parque Terra Nostra, and for good reason. It’s the largest on São Miguel and offers more than just a thermal soak. With your admission, you also gain access to a stunning garden.

Unlike the smaller, bath-like springs on the island, this expansive pool gives you plenty of space to swim and relax without feeling crowded. While the water here may not be as hot as others, its size makes it perfect for a truly relaxing experience.

Parque Terra Nostra also features two smaller thermal baths with waterfall features, more akin to other hot springs on the island. You’ll find changing facilities and an outdoor shower for rinsing off minerals.

Beyond the hot springs, the park itself is a stunning attraction—my favorite on São Miguel. While admission is slightly higher than other springs, it’s worth it for access to both the hot springs and the beautiful park.

The Terra Nostra Garden Hotel

Within Parque Terra Nostra is the beautiful Terra Nostra Garden Hotel and a public restaurant. The restaurant and bar offer excellent fine dining and casual lunches with stunning park views.

Staying at the hotel grants you private evening access to the hot springs after they close to the public, creating a magical experience under the stars. If you’re looking for accommodation in Furnas, this hotel is a great choice with reasonable prices and exclusive spring access.

While day guests must leave by 4:30 pm, hotel guests can soak in the hot springs until midnight. This combination of great amenities and unique evening access makes it one of my favorite São Miguel hot springs.

2. Poça da Dona Beija

Azores Hot Springs Travel Guide

My second favorite hot spring in the Azores is Poça da Dona Beija. While smaller in size, it’s a fantastic spot to unwind. This hot spring features multiple pools, each offering varying temperatures and unique characteristics. My favorite is the pool with a waterfall feature, where the water is especially hot and deeply relaxing. Be prepared for the distinct smell of sulfur that fills the air—part of the authentic experience!

Poça da Dona Beija is one of the most popular hot springs on São Miguel, attracting both tourists and locals. I recommend arriving early to avoid the crowds; I once visited in the afternoon and found the line wrapped around the block. Returning at 10 AM the next day, I found it much quieter and more enjoyable.

These hot springs are particularly popular during the winter months, as locals often visit with their families to warm up, given the lack of central heating on the island. While the lively atmosphere can be enjoyable, I personally prefer a bit more solitude to fully relax. Note that there’s a 1.5-hour time limit per visit, enforced by color-coded wristbands, ensuring everyone gets a chance to enjoy the springs.

3. Termas da Ferraris

Thermal Hot Spring in the Ocean

For a truly unique Azores hot spring experience, visit Termas da Ferraria on São Miguel’s west coast. This hot spring is located right in the ocean, creating a one-of-a-kind experience as you soak in heated water while surrounded by the sea. The sight of this natural wonder is breathtaking, but it can get quite busy due to its popularity.

Although I visited during winter when most facilities were closed, there’s usually a pool, bars, and restaurants open during the warmer months. The area, made entirely of volcanic rock, is stunning. Termas da Ferraria is definitely one of the most unique hot springs on São Miguel—be sure to visit and brave the ocean for an unforgettable experience.

4. Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Caldeira Velha

I’m disappointed to say this is the only Azores hot spring I didn’t get to visit during my trip, but it definitely seems worth a stop. Located in a lush forest within another park, this hot spring is surrounded by vibrant greenery, creating what looks like an incredibly relaxing setting.

From the photos I’ve seen, it might have taken the top spot if I had visited. The park also includes garden areas, offering more than just the thermal springs. I enjoyed my time in the Azores so much that I’m sure I’ll return, and when I do, this will be the first place I visit. I had to include it in this São Miguel hot springs guide.

5. Fumarolas Lagoa das Furnas

When visiting Furnas, don’t miss the Fumarolas Lagoa das Furnas hot springs. Unlike other hot springs on this list, there are no baths here; instead, you’ll find bubbling pools and geysers, similar to those in Yellowstone National Park. Located at the foot of Grenas National Park, it’s a great starting point for a fantastic hike. Note that there’s an entrance fee for both the hot spring area and the park.

If you’re in Furnas to enjoy a traditional volcano-cooked meal, this is where locals cook cozido das Furnas by burying it in the ground. As you walk through, you’ll see covered holes where food is slow-cooked by volcanic heat.

This traditional dish, often made with beef but available in fish and vegetarian options, is a must-try. Some locations even allow you to participate in the cooking process, retrieving your meal from the volcano—a fun and unique experience.

Tips for Visiting Hot Springs in the Azores

Tips for Visiting Hot Springs in the Azores
  1. Wear Dark Clothing: The minerals in the hot springs, like iron and sulfate, can temporarily stain your skin and clothing orange. To avoid ruining your favorite swimsuit, wear dark clothing or something you don’t mind getting discolored. Consider bringing an inexpensive pair of swim trunks just for this purpose.
  2. Arrive Early or Plan to Wait: Hot springs are one of the most popular attractions on São Miguel, even during the off-season. To avoid long lines and crowds, it’s best to arrive early in the morning. If you don’t mind waiting, you can visit later in the day, but expect it to be busier.
  3. Rent a Car to Reach Hot Springs: The hot springs are scattered across the island, so renting a car is the most convenient way to visit them. This allows you to explore at your own pace and reach even the more remote locations.
  4. Book a Group Tour: If you prefer not to drive, consider booking a hot springs tour from Ponta Delgada. This way, you can relax and enjoy the scenery while someone else handles the driving.
  5. Relax and Enjoy Yourself: Hot springs are one of the most relaxing activities in the Azores. Give yourself plenty of time to unwind. Some springs have time limits, but where possible, plan to stay for a while. The serene environment—complete with the sound of rustling leaves, birdsong, and flowing water—offers perfect natural relaxation.
