My First Impressions of SO/ Bangkok

I still remember arriving at SO/ Bangkok after the long journey and immediately being impressed by how beautiful the hotel felt. The lobby and common areas had incredible views over Lumphini Park, with Bangkok’s skyline rising behind it, and the entire property felt far more design-focused than any hotel I had stayed in before.

One of the things that has stuck with me most is actually the scent of the hotel. There were these incredible smells throughout the property, and even now I can still almost smell them when I think back to that stay. It’s such a small detail, but it made the hotel feel distinctive in a way that has stayed with me years later.

The check-in experience was also fantastic. After a long day of travel, the staff brought over cold lemongrass towels and served us tea while we checked in. It was simple, but it immediately gave the whole experience that polished five-star feel.

My SO/ Cozy Room at SO/ Bangkok

I stayed in an SO/ Cozy Double Room with City View, and looking back at the hotel’s current room designs, I believe mine was one of the Wood-inspired rooms.

What I remember most is that the room didn’t feel like a standard luxury hotel room. It had a real design concept behind it, with more personality than the usual neutral interiors you find in many upscale hotels. That was one of the things I really liked about SO/ Bangkok in general: it felt luxurious without feeling overly formal or traditional.

The room was also very comfortable and had a large soaking tub, which was one of my favorite features. I unfortunately don’t remember every little detail of the layout because it has been a while since my stay, but I clearly remember loving the room and feeling like it was a huge step up from the kinds of hotels I had stayed in before that trip.

My room had city views rather than direct views over Lumphini Park, but Bangkok is such an impressive city from above that I still really enjoyed it. One morning, we ordered breakfast via room service and had the whole setup brought into the room, which ended up being one of my favorite moments of the stay.

The Design at SO/ Bangkok

One of the biggest things that separates SO/ Bangkok from more traditional luxury hotels is the design.

The hotel is based around different elemental themes, and that gives the rooms and common spaces a much more creative feel than the standard five-star formula. I personally loved that. It made the hotel feel younger, more modern, and more interesting.

This is also where I think SO/ Bangkok differs most from somewhere like The Peninsula Bangkok. The Peninsula has a much more classic luxury feel, while SO/ Bangkok is more contemporary and playful. I enjoy both styles, but they offer very different experiences.

If you like luxury hotels that feel modern and design-driven rather than traditional, I think SO/ Bangkok does that extremely well.

The SO/ Bangkok Infinity Pool

The infinity pool was easily one of the biggest highlights of my stay.

It overlooks Lumphini Park with the Bangkok skyline behind it, and the view is incredible. Having that huge stretch of green directly below you, surrounded by skyscrapers, makes the pool feel especially unique compared to a more typical city hotel pool.

I liked it so much that I spent an entire day just hanging out there. I grabbed a lounger, ordered lunch poolside, and spent the day enjoying the views rather than trying to squeeze in another sightseeing activity.

The pool never felt overcrowded during my stay, and I never had a problem finding a lounger. That made the whole experience even better because it actually felt relaxing rather than chaotic.

If you’re staying at SO/ Bangkok, I would absolutely leave some time in your itinerary to enjoy the pool. It is one of the hotel’s biggest selling points and, in my opinion, one of the best reasons to stay here.

The Gym

The gym is right near the pool and also has excellent views out over the city.

I don’t usually choose a hotel based on the fitness center, but I remember being impressed with how nice the gym was and how much the views added to the experience. It’s another example of the hotel making good use of its location beside Lumphini Park.

If you like to keep up with workouts while traveling, the gym here is definitely a strong feature.

Breakfast at SO/ Bangkok

Breakfast was another major highlight of my stay.

One morning, we ordered breakfast through room service and had an entire table setup brought into the room with white tablecloth service. The food was fantastic, and having breakfast in the room while looking out over Bangkok made it feel especially luxurious.

On another morning, I went down to the hotel’s main restaurant for the breakfast buffet, and even years later I still remember it as one of the most impressive hotel breakfast buffets I’ve ever experienced.

There was an enormous selection of food, with seemingly anything you could want available somewhere in the buffet. More importantly, the quality was excellent. It wasn’t just impressive because of the size of the spread; the food was genuinely very good.

Breakfast here is definitely on the pricier side compared to eating elsewhere in Bangkok, but I think it’s worth trying at least once during your stay. Bangkok has no shortage of incredible food, so I wouldn’t say you need to eat every breakfast at the hotel, but the buffet is an experience in itself.

There was also a coffee and pastry shop in the lobby that I really enjoyed. It was a nice option for grabbing something smaller without sitting down for a full meal.

Cocktails at the Hotel

One night, we went for cocktails at what was then one of the hotel’s rooftop-style bars.

I say “rooftop-style” because it wasn’t really on the top of the building in the same way as somewhere like Sky Bar at lebua State Tower. It was more along the side of the building, so it didn’t have quite that dramatic rooftop effect.

Still, I had a great time. The atmosphere was fun, the views were beautiful, and it matched the younger overall feel of the hotel really well.

The bar concept has since changed, and the hotel now promotes the Iris Terrace Sunset Lounge in that general part of the property. Based on the current photos, it still looks like a great place to have a drink with a view.

SO/ Bangkok Location: Is It Convenient?

I really liked the location of SO/ Bangkok because it gives you a different experience from the more famous luxury hotels along the Chao Phraya River.

The hotel sits next to Lumphini Park, which was one of my favorite parts of staying here. We walked over to the park several times during the trip and spent time wandering around, watching locals go through their morning routines, spotting monitor lizards, and just enjoying a quieter side of Bangkok.

For a first-time visitor, I thought it was a great introduction to the city.

The hotel is also very close to the MRT, which makes it much easier to get around without relying entirely on taxis or Grab. Bangkok traffic can be intense, so having convenient access to the Metro is a major advantage.

The only real downside to the location is that you’re nowhere near the river. If you want to use Bangkok’s boat system to get around, staying at a riverfront hotel can be much more convenient because the boats can sometimes be faster than sitting in traffic.

But I don’t really see that as a major negative. You’re simply trading river access for Lumphini Park and MRT access, which creates a completely different Bangkok experience.

Modern Luxury vs. Classic Luxury

SO/ Bangkok has a noticeably younger and more modern feel than many of Bangkok’s traditional five-star hotels.

The design is bolder, the common spaces feel more contemporary, and the entire hotel has more of a lifestyle-focused atmosphere. That makes it a great fit for travelers who want luxury but don’t necessarily want something formal or old-school.

For comparison, The Peninsula Bangkok feels much more classic and understated. SO/ Bangkok feels more energetic and design-driven.

I think both approaches work, but SO/ Bangkok is probably the better fit if you want something modern, stylish, and a little more fun.

Service at SO/ Bangkok

The service throughout my stay was excellent.

The check-in experience with the cold lemongrass towels and tea is still the thing I remember most clearly, but the rest of the service was consistently strong as well. Room service was beautifully presented, poolside service was easy, and I never had a negative interaction with the staff.

That matters because a hotel can have great views and beautiful rooms, but service is what really makes it feel like a five-star experience.

SO/ Bangkok delivered on that during my stay.

Is SO/ Bangkok Worth It?

Yes, I think SO/ Bangkok is absolutely worth it.

I don’t remember exactly what I paid during my 2019 stay, but I’ve recently seen the same SO/ Cozy room category around $130 USD per night, depending on the dates. For a five-star hotel with this level of design, service, views, and amenities, I think that can be excellent value.

Bangkok in general is one of the best cities in the world for luxury hotels because you can often get a much higher level of experience for your money than you would in places like New York, London, or Paris.

SO/ Bangkok is a great example of that.

You get a beautifully designed room, a fantastic infinity pool, excellent breakfast, great service, easy MRT access, and one of the best views over Lumphini Park. If you find a good rate, I think the value is very strong.

Who Is SO/ Bangkok Best For?

I think SO/ Bangkok is especially well suited to younger luxury travelers, couples, and first-time visitors to Bangkok.

The hotel has enough luxury to feel special, but it doesn’t feel stiff or overly formal. The pool and bar areas have a younger atmosphere, the design is more modern, and the location is great if you want to explore the city.

It’s also a great option for anyone who doesn’t necessarily want to stay along the river.

If this is your first time in Bangkok and you want somewhere that feels upscale while still giving you easy access to Lumphini Park and the MRT, I think SO/ Bangkok is a really solid choice.

Final Thoughts: Would I Stay at SO/ Bangkok Again?

Absolutely.

This hotel will always be tied to some of my earliest memories of traveling in Asia, but even after spending much more time in Thailand and staying at other luxury hotels around Bangkok, I still think SO/ Bangkok was a fantastic experience.

The infinity pool was incredible, the breakfast was memorable, the service was excellent, and I loved the more modern approach to luxury. The location beside Lumphini Park also gives the hotel a completely different identity from Bangkok’s famous riverfront properties.

I would happily stay here again.

The only reason I haven’t returned yet is that Bangkok has so many other luxury hotels that I still want to experience. If anything, staying at SO/ Bangkok made me more interested in exploring the city’s five-star hotels outside the riverfront area.
